Isla Mujeres Trip - Day 1

Wow, what a day! I can honestly say I'm happy that we are finally here, for the most part safe and we are relaxing in our hotel room. But the journey to this point was not an easy one.

Our flight this morning, the first leg to Houston was scheduled at 6:15am. We got up and were at the airport at 5am, plenty of time to check in and go through security. No one was at the check in counter so no waiting. We had problems with the check in kiosk, so the attendant took over. She had to call someone to get something verified. Something about Noah needing a paper ticket. She FINALLY got that worked out and then something else was wrong with our tickets. She did eventually get that all worked out, however it was now 5:30, a little too close for comfort, but I still had faith.

So we get down to security, a fair line. As we are waiting, they announce that our flight is leaving EARLY!!! And that we are to get to the gate ASAP. Well, crap! So we ask a few people to skip ahead and get to the front. Then the next problem. The stupid lady at the ticket counter gave me two boarding passes for my connecting flight and none for my current flight. I was the only one that had this problem, so I told them to all go ahead and I would catch up. So here I am FULL ON SPRINTING in the airport (with flip flops might I add). I run all the way up there, tell her the problem (in probably not so much of a nice tone) and she blamed it on something and then I had my right ticket. I did another leg of sprinting back down and some pleading to let me in front and I saw David, my dad and Noah turning the corner. I wasn't even sure what time it was anymore. As I'm going through the security, I hear "Will passenger Porter please come to your gate immediately". OMG!!! So then the security lady stops me. Apparently the wipes set off the security thing and she had to look in my bag. Then I told her I was in a hurry, so she quickly zipped up my diaper bag and she ripped the zipper off. She said a quick apology but at this point, I didn't care. I was sprinting again.

I made it all the down to my gate and the attendants were in the process of telling David and my dad that they would have to re-book, they were closing the gate. I think they didn't want to go without me, but since I was there, they hurriedly got us all on the plane.

You'd think the story would be fine from there, but oh no, just getting started!!! So we taxi all the way to the runway and now I'm starting to freak out about the weather (a storm was coming which is why they wanted to leave early). So finally the pilot comes on and says "nope, can't make it, we are going back to the gate". Great, but I'm also thinking ok, this might be a good thing, we can get breakfast. So we sit and wait and sit and wait. All the while, Noah is getting super restless. So then the pilot says, oh just kidding, we are going to wait it out on the runway. GREAT! So we waited through the storm and then we left. In all, we got on the plane around 5:50am, sat there until around 7:10am and then flew for the next 2 hours. We were SO ready to get off that plane. Not to mention the added craziness of riding on a super small plane and turbulence from the storm. At least, as soon as we took off, Noah fell asleep and did great the rest of the flight.

When we got to Houston, we originally had a 2 hour layover. This was now cut to about an hour or so, and we had to ride a train over to the right terminal. So we do all that and we all breath a sigh of relief that it looks like we are in plenty of time. We laugh at the silly people in line thinking they are there from prior late flights trying to make our flight, but it was already full to begin with. Then David and I go get food (we were starving). We come back and they are boarding so we get in line and we are subsequently rejected because we don't have a blue mark on our boarding pass....what!?!?! So now we have to wait in this silly line with everyone else...watching the minutes ticking by again. This time, there is only 1 agent working the line and I'm sure she is being bogged down by requests to fly stand by, etc. So FINALLY, the lady says she will accept those without a blue mark...great, so we stood in that line for no reason. So we go over and try to get on and are rejected by the computer. Something was wrong with our original check in lady (I think at this point, I'm realizing that original lady wasn't so bright and had no idea what she was doing). So she finally gets it all worked out, but it was like 15 minutes and everyone behind us was getting antsy (and I don't blame them). So we get on our flight and Noah again falls asleep soon after take off, sleeping a majority of the time.

The only hiccup at this point is we ran into some bad weather at the end and none of us really had time to fill out our immigration and customs forms. Oh well. We are in Cancun, finally!!! So we get off the plane and go through immigration and customs and get our bags (a small scare since our bags were like next to last). Then we find our transfer service and get on our way to the ferry. Nothing too interesting happened after this point. We rode the ferry over with no issues and took a taxi (only $3) to our hotel. Our first hotel room had a bunch of stuff wrong and the air was messed up, so we complained and we got a new room. This new room still had some stuff not up to par, but they seemed to fix it pretty quickly. We went to dinner at Rolandi's, yummy pizza. And then to the super market for a few essentials.

Overall, a good day and we are all glad to be here, relaxing. The people on the island are all really nice and love talking to Noah. Noah has done really well, especially considering everything.

UPDATE: I totally forgot to mention that our diaper bag was broken for good. There was no way to fix the zipper that the security people messed up. I ended up getting some thread and a needle and sewing the opening shut. Luckily, there is another opening for that pocket, but still, an annoyance. I will be taking the bag back when we get home. I'm not having any luck posting pictures here, so you'll have to refer to my facebook until I get home. SORRY!!!
