7 weeks - Health Problems

Noah is 7 weeks and some days old (sorry, it's been too long since I've updated). I had my first REAL breastfeeding problem, or at least I think it's a breastfeeding problem. On Friday, I felt very run down and tired and I chalked it up to just being a busy mom. Later in the night, I started feeling even worse...very dizzy, light-headed, achy, etc. I took my temperature and it was 99.2, not really that high, but slightly elevated. So David suggested I take a bath. I swear that water must have been 110 degrees but I was shivering the whole time. After I got out, I thought my whole body was going to give way, so I pumped and went to bed (at 8pm). David (being the wonderful husband and daddy that he is) took care of Noah so I could get some rest.

My self-diagnosis is something called Mastitis, or a breast infection. My right boob has been feeling very sore and painful and now it's swollen and has red marks all over it (sorry for too much information). That mixed with my flu-like symptoms has lead me to this diagnosis. Sadly the treatment is really just rest, relaxation and lots of breastfeeding. I've been trying to do that today, but also get ready for the baptism tomorrow. I'm sure I will survive and the several doses of Tylenol have helped so far. I'll update everyone tomorrow on how the baptism goes.

6 weeks - Sleeping

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!!

Today Noah is 6 weeks old. I can't believe how much he has grown in the past 6 weeks. He's finally smiling and showing his personality. He can really lift his head quite a bit, whether he is on his tummy or sitting upright. He also makes noises when he gets really excited. Mommy is finally starting to get the hang of staying home. I'm sure I'll perfect it right before I go back to work, which is April 28 for anyone that didn't know.

Another exciting development is Noah's sleep, particularly at night. Last night, we put him to sleep about 10pm and he slept until 5am, about 7 hours!!!! When he woke up, I fed and changed him, and he slept again until 8am. Mommy is definitely appreciating all this extra sleep. The bad part: he doesn't seem to want to nap much during the day no matter how much I try to get him down. Then in the evening he is super cranky. Hopefully we can fix this problem.

We are looking forward to Noah's baptism on March 28. I don't have any other pictures to post right now, but hopefully I will soon.

Cloth Diapers

I have been thinking about cloth diapers for about a week now. I have to say that if I knew everything I know now, I would have done cloth diapers from the beginning, so I thought I would share my knowledge so others are not as misinformed as I was.

First of all, cloth diapers have come a LONG way since the old flat diapers that you had to fold, put diaper pins on, and then those plastic bottoms on top. The diapers that we have chosen are called Flip and they are a brand from the store here in town called Cotton Babies. Basically, there is an insert that is microcloth on one side (the side that touches their bottom) and the other side is terrycloth. The microcloth wicks the moisture from their bottom. These inserts fit into the cover which has flaps on the front and back. Then the cover snaps close. These diapers are also one size fits all, which means they can be tightened across the waist and they can be lengthened, all using the snaps. At first, I thought the snaps would be hard, but they aren't and the alternative is velcro and from what I understand, that wears out over time.

Next, after he soils a diaper, you just pull out the insert and put in another one. We store the soiled diapers in a plastic tote bag inserted in a trashcan. When we are on the run, we have a wet/dry bag we use. After a few times of changing the insert or if there is a huge poopy diaper, we will change out the cover.

When it comes to laundry, we are doing it on Mon, Wed, and Fri. It seems like a lot, but the loads are easy to do. We just throw it all in and then only the inserts are dried in the dryer. The covers are hung dry, but they dry in about 2 hours. Because we are exclusively breastfeeding, everything is water soluble. That means no rinsing or dunking in the toilet, it all just goes straight into the washer. Also, that means nothing stinks (YEAH!!!). Once he starts on solid foods (another topic), we will have to throw out the solid poop, but that shouldn't be too bad.

The best part: the cost. We paid $300 for all the diapers, inserts, cloth wipes, and our bags. We will make that back in about 6 months and then we can keep on using them and even use them for the next kid. Here's a picture in his new diaper and a few extras.

It's hard to tell, but this is one of Noah's first smiles. He started doing this today.

1 month update

It's a little off, but Noah is 1 month already!!!

I took him to his 1-month doctor's appointment last Thursday. His weight is now 9lb and 11oz. His length is 21 3/4 inches. Both of those are really close to the 50th percentile, which means he's right on track. It's also neat to see that he's gained so much weight already. Since I'm breastfeeding, it's good to know it's working. It's also fascinating that basically I'm the one sustaining his life.

I don't have any pictures to post right now, but I'll try to take lots this week. Noah has been holding his head up a lot more lately. Also, we got out for the first time on Friday. We went and checked out the new casino in South County, which BTW was awesome. Grandpa stayed with him and they both did great.

Nothing too exciting this week except we have our post-birth reunion with our birth class. I'll post later about it.

Professional Photos

We went to Olan Mills photography (Macy's) to get Noah's 1-month pictures done. We did it a little early, but only by 4 days! We really liked the photographer and I think the pictures came out great. We ordered several, especially since we got a bunch for free. I think you can go to the website and order more, but if any one wants a copy of one, please let us know and we can order it for you or we can send you a digital copy once we receive the CD with all the photos on it. ENJOY!
